The Person Family

horizontal rule

It is uncertain exactly where the Person family fits in the Mangum Saga. Some believe that William Mangum Sr. of the Virginia to North Carolina migration married Mary Person, daughter of John Person and Mary Partridge. The given names of John Person are almost identical to those of the Mangum families of the time, including William and Mary Mangum. Also, this Mary Person was of the right age to be William Mangum's wife. However, no documented evidence of William Mangum's marriage has been found. The will of Mary Person's brother, Samuel Person (Isle of Wight, VA, 1753), calls her Mary Glover. It is therefore doubtful that this Mary Person was the wife of William Mangum Sr. Some researchers have listed Job Person as her father but there are never any references. It is known that the Mangums and Persons were very close in Virginia and some of the Person family members were represented in the N. C. records after the Mangum migration.
